Summer Charity Walkathons

Atlanta Nonprofit Organizations Examiner

As summer approaches, many non-profit organizations will take their good works to the streets of Atlanta for the nation's most popular charity exercise, the run/walkathon. Year round, many local service groups spend their time creating unique ways to raise money to support special causes.
Some of the most popular fundraisers in which these groups participate include: dinners, award shows, concerts, bake sells, and car washes. However, even as the heat rises, perhaps the most admired fundraiser, which is the charity marathon, is in full swing.
Many Atlanta residents train rigorously for annual runs/walkathons, but not for the glory. They are racing for a cure and/or cause, which is what most charity organizations are raising money to develop. These races provide a good time for families, social groups, clubs, corporate businesses, and community supporters.
Moreover, they also strengthen the Atlanta community by bringing everyone together for a common cause and goal. Furthermore, outdoor charity events have gained a tremendous popularity during the past few years, which have made runs/walkathons a lucrative source of funding for non-profit organizations
Charity runs/walkathons can also be viewed as a great fitness program with a competitive edge to keep participants motivated. Participants will have a network of many supporters that will help one another stay fit.
If you are looking to have fun in the sun this summer, contribute to a common goal, and benefit from a lucrative health and wellness program, register for a walkathon near you.

Marissa Alexander

A judge denied Marissa Alexander a new trial this morning in a 2010 shooting that left no one dead or injured. Her case drew renewed interest since her attempt to use the "Stand Your Ground" defense was initially rejected, while the killer of Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman was set free after using the same argument in his case.

A judge denied a Jacksonville woman convicted in a 2010 shooting a new trial Thursday morning despite her Stand Your Ground claim against an abusive husband.

Marissa Danielle Alexander, 31, now faces a 20-year mandatory term in prison in her sentencing set for May 11. A jury found her guilty of three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Circuit Judge James Daniel is considering, however, acquitting Alexander on one of her three charges as the result of the testimony of one of the three victims. That victim, the son of her husband, Rico Gray, recounted his previous accounts to authorities when he testified at Alexander's trial that he was not in fear of his life during the shooting.

How to Register to Vote

Note: Voter registration is a county function. Georgia counties issue precinct cards after reviewing and processing applications.

You may confirm your voter registration status through MVP. If you have submitted a voter registration application within the prior three to four weeks and your name does not appear, please contact your local county registrar office to check the status of your application.

Georgia citizens have access to several convenient methods of registering to vote:

  • Download, complete, and mail a voter registration application.  (Visit SOS website)
  • Contact your local county board of registrars' office or election office, public library, public assistance office, recruitment office, schools and other government offices for a mail-in registration form.
  • Registration is offered when you renew or apply for your driver's license at Department of Motor Vehicle Safety driver’s license posts.
  • College students can obtain Georgia voter registration forms, or the necessary forms to register in any state in the U.S., from their school registrar's office or from the office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Change of Residence

Voters are required to notify the board of registrars of their county of residence whenever they move.
If you move within the same county in which you are registered to vote and don't notify the registrar at least 30 days prior to an election, you may vote in your old polling place for that election. You must file a notice of your new address. This can be done by writing to your county board of registrars' office, or by submitting a new voter registration application.
If you move outside the county in which you are registered to vote within 30 days of an election, you may vote in your old precinct for that election.

If you move outside the county in which you are registered to vote in excess of 30 days prior to an election, you have lost your eligibility to vote in the county of your old residence. You must register to vote in your new county of residence. You will be assigned a new voting precinct and polling location. Remember, if you don't register to vote by the deadline, you cannot vote in that particular election.

Precinct Cards
If you have misplaced or have not received your precinct card within three to four weeks of submitting your voter registration application, please contact your local county registration office to request a new precinct card or to check the status of your application. You may also check whether you are registered through MVP.
